The scene is set in Manhattan, circa 1941. At an inventors workshop, located in a building down a narrow alley called “41 Murray St.”; the Chemex was born. The larger tale is one of eccentricity, curiosity, perseverance and invention. This story inspired our “Home of the Chemex” poster which we lovingly created for the New York Coffee Fest. Due to such high demand for the beautiful piece, we have decided to add it to our collection for you to take home. It features our very first Chemex logo and a vintage drawing of our beloved carafe. The “X” on the subway map marks the spot of Dr. Schlumbohm’s legendary apartment where he designed the iconic Chemex coffeemaker.

The illustration captures that whole 1941 inventor’s workshop vibe so perfectly, down to the dim alleyway and the little details on the tools. It’s got this warm, gritty feel that makes me stare at it every time I walk past, and the paper quality is thick enough to frame without any fuss.

The detail of “41 Murray St.” on the poster is what sold me—it makes the whole 1941 origin story feel so authentic. I’ve got it framed over my coffee station and it’s a great conversation starter every single time.

The 1941 Manhattan alley and workshop detail really pulls you into the story—it’s like a little piece of coffee history framed on the wall. The print quality is sharp enough that the text is easy to read from across the room, and it’s become a great conversation starter in my kitchen.
